THE LEADERHIP CARES GOLF CLASSIC RAISES FUNDS TO DEVELOP CARING LEADERS AND TO SUPPORT OUTREACH PROGRAMS IN MENTORING, LITERACY TRAINING AND HUNGER RELIEF 

 

Gaithersburg MD August 3, 2004. The annual Leadership Cares Golf Classic was held at the Bretton Woods Country Club in Germantown Maryland on August 2nd 2004. The event was held to support the mentoring, hunger relief and literacy awards programs of the Leadership Cares Foundation.

 

Each participant received a golfer goodie bag containing an official Greg Norman Leadership Cares golf shirt, golf towel, golf balls donated by the American Bankers Association, coupons for free appetizers from Glory Days Grill and a variety of other “take home” items. Teams representing local and national organizations played 18 holes and then enjoyed a networking buffet luncheon. Some of the organizations that were represented at this year’s event included the Restaurant Association of Metropolitan Washington, Microsoft Inc., AT&T, Boys and Girls Clubs of Greater Washington, Timmons and Company, Richard Montgomery High School, American Hospital Association and the American Bankers Association.

 

Mr. Steve Silverman, President of the Montgomery County Council was the featured speaker at the luncheon. He spoke about the need for both non-profits and local government to work together to support youth development programs especially in the area of developing future leaders. He encouraged the audience by speaking passionately about the importance of youth mentoring and adult literacy programs in our diverse and ever changing community.

 

Lula Davis, Executive Director of Leadership Cares let participants know that because of their participation the organization would be able to feed over 650 families as part of the ThanksgivingCares™ program, operate the MentorCares™ program for the upcoming school year and increase its’ LiteracyCares™ outreach. She also recognized the volunteers, teenagers and young adults who assisted in the planning and execution of the event.

 

At the end of the luncheon festivities awards were presented to the male and female golfer who had the longest drive and were closest to the pin. A putting contest was also a part of this year’s festivities. A business card drawing for prizes was also held. Donated prizes included dinners at Sam and Harry’s Restaurants, Chef Geoff’s, Smith and Wollenskys, Clyde’s Restaurant Group, Lansdowne Resort, Maryland Turf Caterers, Red Sage, Glory Days Grill and Bretton Woods.
