Thoughts of the Month

Effective Managers and Leaders-Create a Personal Brand!-I often think about why some managers are effective while others never seem to quite get it together. Some managers have a great relationship with their team while others never seem to click. Some managers naturally attract and include others while other managers repel people. What's the difference? Successful managers and leaders have created a personal brand. They know what it takes to sell themselves as a manager and leader. How do they do this? See our section below entitled: Tips on Creating "Brand You" for several "take home "ideas!

Bill's Birthday Bash-To celebrate his birthday Bill Marvin is sharing some of his best ideas that will help you prosper in today's challenging economy, raise your level of service and set yourself apart from the competition. Coming this November it promises to be a fast-paced program crammed full of no-nonsense, proven ways to increase sales and bring your operation up a notch or two! On the Front Lines of Service
Pretend Your The Guest Program-One of the most effective ways to teach service to our new generation of employees is to put them squarely in the place of the guest. Consider having your trainers as part of the orientation process sit down and have a fully served meal with your new associates. It's an opportunity to really set the stage for how things should be done and why they are done in a very specific way. Here are four things do consider as you try this approach:
  • At specific intervals in the meal stop and talk about the company's priority as it relates to guest service.
  • Note what service steps are critical and why they're critical to the new employee's success.
  • If something doesn't go right ask the new associate how they felt. Ask what they would do to correct.
  • Work to link they way they personally want to be served to the mission of serving their guests.

Training Tip: This could also be used for veteran servers that need a little refresher on what your service standards are and how they should be delivered!

Building Leadership Skills
Real Life Succession Planning-The Nuts and Bolts of Your Company's Future: We've been exploring the five things that you should consider as part of implementing a real life succession plan. Read the list of five by clicking on:  http://www.ronyudd.com/popn040727.htm.

This month's focus is on step two: 2. Create a written, super specific and time-lined path for your up and coming supervisors and managers to follow in order to learn and master identified skills!

  • Ensure the path is easily understood by all team members and expectations are super detailed.
  • Ensure that leadership and mentees sticks to the path--there are no shortcuts to real life succession.
  • Build in real celebration and showcasing when a mentee completes their journey along the path!

Profitability Plus
Have you checked your systems lately? Periodically it's important to spend time checking the systems that you have in place to control cost and enhance profitability. Often times because of the pressure of day to day operations we fail to stop and see if what we have in place is working and helping us make the right decisions. Here's a quick list to look into over the next month:
  • Pars-Last time adjusted?-Food, Liquor + non-food items. Items sitting on the shelf cost us $!
  • The Daily Cycle-Walk the process from buying to receiving to issuing products into production.
  • Tracking-variance/reconciliation-How are we tracking and following-up on center of the plate items?
  • POS-Info-Are we fully using it's capabilities to help schedule, prep products and control other cost?
  • Sign In-Sign Out-Checking the codes and matching things up with hours worked vs. hours paid.

Leadership Cares

Call for ThanksgivingCares™ Sponsors and Supporters. This year Leadership Cares hopes to feed over 700 families in the Washington D.C. area. This year companies and organizations can adopt a family for $15.00. Each one of our boxes contains ingredients to feed six to eight people. Of course we would love it if an organization adopted 100 families for $1,500 or even 200 families for $3,000--you know where I am going with this! Industry sponsors and supporters can also help out in a variety of other ways. We're looking for food donations, funding for rental trucks, volunteers to work with our young people and help with implementing this concept in your city or region. Read about last year's success at: http://www.ronyudd.com/pr031210.htm

Leadership Cares Call For Mentors-Our greatest need is for caring adults to step forward and become mentors. Just two hours per month can help a young person learn the leadership and life skills that will help them be successful in the marketplace and in their community. Mentors also learn how to apply our concepts in their workplace!!! It's a win-win! Please email us at ron@leadershipcares.org for more information!

Take Home Idea of the Month
Tips on Promoting "Brand" You

Think for a moment about the product brands that you have a strong and long term relationship with. Is it the   toothpaste you automatically grab from the store shelf. Do you only use a certain brand of canned tomatoes for your sauces? Is there a certain wine label that you rely on when you want to make sure it's perfect?

You as a manager and leader are also a brand. You are a brand to your people. You are, in a way, their toothpaste, canned tomatoes and wine choice. Here's several things to think about as you build your personal brand. Remember it's all about building a strong and long term relationship with your people:

  • Show genuine interest in others and in their thoughts and ideas.
  • Be engaged--be out there in the trenches with your managers and staff. Be a "hands on" leader!
  • Make others feel important and they in turn will feel that you're important!

Sounds like a mini-road map for what we should be teaching our KMs, DMs and others at the unit level!
