Thought of the Month

The Benefit of Coaching for The Coach-This month's thought comes from Chef Robert Stritzinger, Executive Chef, of the Grand Hotel in Grand Canyon, Arizona. He teaches us about the benefit coaching has for the coach, not just the team he is leading! Robert reports the following: "My style as a chef has always been to coach others. I have always tried to give back since some chefs coached me to win my first gold medal in an ACF competition. I now coach on an active and conscious level. Consciously encouraging, helping and coaching others has provided me with a source of inspiration that fuels my passions and keeps me going through even the toughest of times". Thanks, Chef Robert, for reminding us about the real reward of working as coach!

On the Front Lines of Service
Service-Mechanical vs. Personal-Guests can immediately detect and more importantly are turned off when service is robotic and mechanical. Successful operators in a variety of industries work to teach their staffs to  be more personable than mechanical in the delivery of service. Here are two things to consider in the new year that will help enhance personal service:
  • Work to build more "table time" into your standards. Actually make an investment of having your service staff spend more time with their guests. There is a direct correlation between table time and higher check average.
  • Allow staff to build their own fan club--reward them when guests seek them out as their server. Monitor this and remember what we learned long ago. It's less expensive to retain a guest (create regulars) than to attract a new one. This is one way to do just that!

Building Leadership Skills
Real Life Succession Planning-The Nuts and Bolts of Your Company's Future: We've been exploring the five things that you should consider as part of implementing a real life succession plan. Read the list of five by clicking on:  http://www.ronyudd.com/popn040727.htm.

This month's focus is on step five: 5. Commit from the very top to "live" the succession plan. The Training Director, Area Directors, VPs and CEO each time they address the team (in writing as well as in person) always use the commitment to the plan as a springboard to frame every company discussion. This will help create focus for your entire team. Everyone will be on the same page as you develop future leaders! Two things to think about:

  • Every meeting, every conference, every memo starts with an update on the succession plan, it's importance to everyone's future and exactly how things are moving along.
  • Every associate, from busser to CEO, knows that the success of the company is built on what each person leaves behind as they move up the ladder and most important of all---no one moves up the ladder until they've helped to develop the associate that will take their place. Wow-Talk about "Real Life" Mentoring!

Profitability Plus
This month the concept of Half Hour by Half Hour Job Descriptions. It's not what it sounds like. This point of profit involves mapping out what you as the leader and manager want to specifically accomplish during the shift. Walk the process and list, position by position, exactly what you want to have completed each half hour during  the entire shift. The more specific you can be about what you want to accomplish the better.

This type of exercise provides clarity for the associate on your expectations and it will also help you more effectively and efficiently schedule your staff.

Take Home Tip:  Start with one key position and walk through a "shift in the life" of that employee, noting expectations vs. reality. Also check my favorite one--"the getting ready to go to work time"--conversation, coffee, steal some fries, check the cell, visit the locker room--you know where I'm going here.  The point is to start looking at each position and what you specifically expect that position to accomplish over the shift.

Take Home Idea of the Month
Developing Your Personal Brand

We're repeating this one from last month because of the feedback you sent! Its getting close to the New Year and it may be the perfect time to think about your brand and how you project yourself to your public (your employees and guests) Here's five things to consider as you take a look at your personal brand:

  • How's your personal appearance? Do you model how you want your employees to look?
  • Do you listen before your speak? Is what others say more important than what you have to say?
  • Check your demeanor-how do you approach other people? Are you open to conversation?
  • Do you make others feel more important than you?
  • When was the last time you complemented someone that works for you?

Managers Meeting Tip: Help your assistant managers develop their personal brand by discussing these five bullet points on brand at your next managers meeting!
