Thought of the Month

Each One Teach One-The other day I saw a TV spot promoting and celebrating National Mentoring Month.  Quincy Jones, the world famous music producer, composer, and producer talked about how he was mentored as a kid and what it meant to him. It's no wonder that he has spent his entire adult life mentoring others. Of course we hear all about the famous people he helped when they were unknowns like Will Smith and Oprah. What we don't hear about are the countless young people that he has reached out to. A few years ago he took a group of at-risk teens from LA to South Africa where they met Nelson Mandela and helped build homes for Habitat for Humanity. The experience changed their lives. At the end of this TV spot Quincy Jones looks into the camera and says....."think about it--if each one of us mentored just one person--what a difference we could make". Maybe this year--our goal should be to simply follow Quincy's advice--each one teach one!

On the Front Lines of Service-by Jackie Yudd

Seeing the Dining Room Through the Manager's Eyes-Training service staff to see the big picture is often frustrating because they often have trouble just seeing the little picture (their station or just their area direct responsibility-bus stand-counter etc). Even though the mission may be a tough one --it's still worth working with your staff to help them see things through the eyes of the owner and manager.

Think about the following bullet points as you teach staff about their role in the big picture. Remember the goal is to create other sets of "manager's eyes" everywhere in the house.

  • Concept of One Station-The house is one station and everyone is responsible.
  • Little Things Make a Huge Difference- Be focused on the details from pick-up window to guest table.
  • Everything Interacts to Create the Whole Meal Experience-It takes the "eyes" of the entire team to be looking out for each other to ensure that the guest has an incredible experience!
Building Leadership Skills

Creating the Next Generation of Leaders-Good succession planning is all about preparing young managers for future leadership roles in your organization. We are almost half way through our exploration of the 12 leadership skills needed for genuine success in today's business world.

This Month-Leadership Skill Number Five: Selflessness This skill is about being aware of how others have a direct effect on your success as a leader. A leader that only thinks of himself is not a leader at all. Genuinely successful leaders know the importance of how leading from a "selfless" position directly effects their success as the leader. When you reduce it down to it's essence--successful leadership is based on unselfishly serving others.

Selfless Leaders:

  • Act like a supporter of others rather than their commander-in-chief.
  • Put the needs of others first-not just their guests, but their staff and fellow managers.
  • Deflect praise away from themselves and give it to others. Their personal satisfaction comes from the success of those they praise!

Teaching Tip: Ask your key team leaders to recognize someone else this week for their contribution in the workplace. Then ask these managers how they felt as they delivered this selfless praise. The more they do this the more they'll want to continue!

Points of Profit

Waste = Dollar Lost This simple equation is easy to understand but often in the day-to-day hustle and craziness that goes on in the kitchen associates lose site of what's important. The point of profit here is to think about how you can create awareness among staff that handle all the food, china, silver, glass and supplies. That's everybody of course! Consider these three ideas as you kick off 2007:

  • Teach staff to see food items and portions as dollars. Let everyone know actual cost of portions and items--not just center of the plate items.
  • Tie bonuses for hot side and cold side kitchen staff to costs related to the items they actually produce.
  • Reward waste finder/identifiers-not for getting others in trouble---but to enhance the overall profit and success of the operation.

Take Home Idea of the Month
Create Your Own Roadmap to Success

Start off the New Year by thinking about creating a success map for yourself. Ask yourself  what you want your success destination to be in twelve months. Where do you really want to be on a personal and professional level? What will you need to get there? What stops along the way will you have to make during your journey towards success? Start simple-don't put too much pressure on yourself. Every journey begins with the first step. Here's several ideas to get your started:

  • List two or three things you really want to accomplish in your personal and professional life.
  • Envision what it looks like when you have reached your destination on these items.
  • List two or three super simply things you can do today, right now that will kick start your journey.

One of the keys to your successful journey is to commit to do one little thing each day that will take you closer to your destination. Keep in mind you can use this same very technique for developing your people and also doing a little success planning for you business.

Manager's Note: At your next meeting share the above information with your key people. The more people traveling together on a success journey-----the faster everyone will reach the desired destination!
